A LITTLE THEOLOGY FROM SOPHIA

Posted on Posted in Piper's Blog

This isn’t directly about Piper, but a little family moment we wanted share.

Tonight Erin put Sophia to bed, which is a regular occurrence.  I get to help her brush her teeth and help her go potty each night, and then she says, “but mommy gets to take to me bed,” or “Mommy! I’m going to let you take me to bed!”  It’s pretty cute.  I only “get” to take her to bed about once a week.  I’m not complaining.  That little girl is my proudest accomplishment and we spend a ton of time snuggling together.  Mostly at 3 am when she climbs into our bed (yeah, yeah…I know) and she pats my face and says, “Daddy, I love you sooo much.”  Try kicking your kid out of bed after that!

Anyway, Erin took Sophia to bed tonight and they were laying together and Erin said, “Mommy prayed to God for you for a long time, and then I finally got you.”  Sophia responded, “I know, but at first He didn’t, and then He took me away.”  Then Erin tried not to make a big deal about it and asked “What? Sophia you’re silly,” to which she said, “It’s because He was bad,” with a giggle.

What’s immensely moving is that Sophia is right.  Most of you probably know that Erin got pregnant back in 2009.  We were so thrilled because we had tried IVF for several unsuccessful years at that point and it was the excitement of a lifetime.  Then, ironically, we learned she miscarried on my 30th birthday.  I’ll never forget.  November 20, 2009 was a really crappy day.

Then, a few months later, we tried again, and on December 26, 2010, Sophia Louise Lee was born.  She is everything we every hoped for in a child.  She is kind, smart, loving, compassionate and most importantly…strong!

When you hear your child say something so poignant and on-point as Sophia said tonight, it hits home.  Kids say weird things.  They say things that make no sense, and maybe that’s what this was.  Or maybe…just maybe, this was something more.  Something it would be easy to blow off or ignore, yet…neither one of us feels that way.  Every now and then God touches your heart.  You can feel it and hear it if you want to, or you can ignore it and call it coincidence.  I think we heard from God tonight, and it felt really nice.
