OFF OF CONTINUOUS DIALYSIS

It was a long night with lots of interruptions for blood work, medicine and weigh-ins, but it was wonderful to crawl out of the cot this morning to find Piper free from the dialysis machine and just laying there in her crib looking around.

Apparently, around 2 am the machine clotted up and rather than try and restart it, they felt like her blood work was good enough to take her off the machine. I remember some crying and screaming around that time but I must have slept through it. It’s amazing what your body can do in stressful situations.

Anyway, this morning was a great surprise and I listened to the doctors discuss Piper’s condition while doing rounds and it was nice to hear they were all feeling very positive about everything. It was also nice to be able and pick her up and hold her!

To give you an idea about the kind of hospital AI DuPont is, both the transplant doctor and the transplant coordinator came to visit Piper today…on their days off!

It’s a special place!

We are also lucky that our friend Megan and her daughter Emma came to spend time with Harper today while Erin came to take over for me at the hospital. Our friends the Ricciardi’s also took Sophia for the day so she could play with her friend Joey.  I was grateful to get a few hours to myself and spent them wisely, sweating buckets while playing nine holes of golf. Thanks to our friends Des for making that happen. I can’t emphasize enough how kind and helpful Des and James Headley have been.

Tomorrow is a big day as tumor board and the transplant team will formulate a plan for Piper’s kidney removals and imminent transplant. I will certainly update you all on what happens, but for now, I will sign off and get some sleep. Back to work tomorrow for a bit and then it’s my turn to stay the night with Piper.

I love reading the comments so keep them coming. Thanks again to you all for your prayers and well wishes.

Love, Chris and Erin
