DAY AFTER SURGERY UPDATE

Posted on Posted in Piper's Blog

Piper is doing well and is being well taken care of here at A.I. DuPont Hospital. She had a long night as they tried hard to get her blood pressure down to a reasonable level. This morning she underwent dialysis for about 2.5 hours and that really helped.

Erin stayed overnight last night after I went home at 10 pm. I got some good sleep and played with Harper and Sophia all morning and then came over here to relieve Erin at about noon.  Erin was happy to have her mom and Des here during the morning to keep her company.

Things are going well. I feel so happy that her kidneys are out of her and we will be very anxious to see the results of the pathology performed on them. There is some chatter about waiting until the Spring to do the transplant but hopefully that isn’t true. Ultimately it is up to Dr. Dunn, the transplant surgeon, to make that decision but we heard that they might like to avoid transplants during winter months due to immunosuppresion issues. We shall see.

I also want to take a moment to highlight the unbelievable efforts of the transplant team here yesterday. Dr. Stephen Dunn and Dr. Abigail Martin performed the surgery and they truly are two extremely gifted surgeons. I know I’m biased but these two doctors are so very highly regarded in their field and we’ve now seen the proof. Also, Cathy McAdams continues to shine as our transplant coordinator. We are so lucky to be associated with such wonderful health professionals who happen to be even better human beings.

Thanks again for all of the love!

Love – Chris and Erin

P.S. – I did confirm that I got through the donation screening process faster than anyone they’ve ever had. I told them I was serious about it! I was also very gratified to hear that Dr. Gilibert said I was the best donation candidate A.I. has sent her in 8 years. God has truly blessed us.

  3. Hi Erin and Chris,
I am a former EEC teacher but had the pleasure of working as pm assistant in the Infant rm last Fall. I took care of your beautiful little ladies and quickly “fell in love”. I volunteer at the Hosp on Mondays. Saw Piper and spoke with Grandmom. I appreciated the update on her journey. I know she is in the best hands at A.I. They are helping to pave the way to her recovery and you (Chris), are giving her the “ultimate gift”. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family all along the way. Best wishes for Resilience, Recovery and Healing for Piper and your family.
