TWO STEPS FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK

Posted on Posted in Piper's Blog

Piper is back in the hospital again and I’m writing this from another uncomfortable fold out bed in her room at 11:20 pm. She had her dialysis today and the dialysis nephrologist did not feel comfortable with the very high blood pressures he was getting so he wanted her admitted. The blood pressure readings were pretty high, but not a lot higher than when she was discharged a few days ago. Nonetheless, the docs were freaked out so here we are again.

Erin was here with her during dialysis and until she was formally admitted around 6:30 pm. I had to run up to the airport with Harper to get Lindsay and Brooke Pavlish (so glad they’re here) and then took them home and came to relieve Erin.  Initially, our friend Des offered to stay the night here and we were going to take her up on it, but I just couldn’t leave.  Des still came by with a big cheeseburger for me which was much appreciated!

The docs have now upped a bunch of her medications and they promised not to check her blood pressure all night. They just want to keep her here for observation. If the blood pressure returns to normal levels tomorrow, they’ll let her go home. Unfortunately, they’ve also increased her dialysis to daily visits instead of every other day visits.

This sucks a lot. Just when we were so happy to have her home before her big surgery next week, this happened. Sometimes it’s really hard to deal with this kind of stuff. We want this little girl HOME and it’s all starting to wear on all of us, even our sweet girl Sophia. She told me this morning on the way to school that she was going to make Piper’s boo boos feel better because she’s the big sister and that’s her job.

I also got a call from Cathy McAdams today that informed me that I have an abnormally large aorta. It was spotted on the echocardiogram this morning by the pediatric nephrologist. I was lucky to get into see an adult cardiologist as early as 8:00 am tomorrow morning. No one thinks it will be a problem, but they want to be safe rather than sorry. Of course the joke is that we now have proof that I have a big heart. That’s better than the other joke that everyone thinks is so funny these days…which is that I’m the real life Phil Dunphy.

Hopefully we’ll get Piper out of here tomorrow and my appointment will go off without a hitch. I will certainly let you know.

Love, Chris and Erin
