DREADED DIARRHEA DEHYDRATES

Posted on Posted in Piper's Blog

Piper is doing fine, as is everyone else, but she is spending the night in the hospital tonight after several days of pretty nasty diarrhea.  We’re not sure if it’s a bug or if it’s her diet or the formula she takes via feeding tube every night, but we’re a bit nervous she is getting dehydrated and that’s something we really want to avoid.  For that reason, she will spend the night in the hospital hooked up to an IV so as to re-hydrate.  They will also work to find the cause and solution to the diarrhea problem.

Her kidney is working great and her blood work continues to look really good.  We just need to make sure she stays otherwise healthy.  If she gets sick and her body starts creating antibodies to attack whatever “foreign” bug is in her, there’s always the risk the antibodies could attack the kidney too.  That’s why the doctor’s work so hard to cross check the donor and recipients antigens and antibodies.  You don’t want the recipient’s body attacking the new kidney right off the bat.

I’m hoping this will just be a one night stay.  I think Erin is going to spend the night with her, but I’ve offered to stay in case Erin isn’t up for it.  I will let you know what happens as soon as we know more.

Love – Chris and Erin
