THE HOSPITAL IS OUR FRIEND…THE HOSPITAL IS OUR FRIEND

If I just keep saying that, then I won’t be so disheartened every time Piper has to go back to the hospital for an overnight.  Everything is fine, but she spent Sunday night at the hospital and should be released today.

She hasn’t been eating very well and has continued to have diarrhea.  After her blood work on Sunday morning, we learned that her creatinine had risen to .3, which causes everyone to worry.  She should be at .2, but if she gets to .4, then on paper, it looks as if her kidney isn’t working.  Another cause, of course, is diarrhea, which causes dehydration.  Anyway, yesterday afternoon, Cathy McAdams called Erin and told her that Piper would need to spend the night in the hospital.  Not exactly how we wanted to spend Super Bowl Sunday.  After Piper (and the rest of us) woke up from our naps around 3 pm, Erin took her in and I stayed with Sophia and Harper.

Once at the hospital, she was admitted to a room and hooked up to an IV for fluids.  With that much diarrhea, they get very nervous about dehydration and wanted to flush her full of fluids to get that kidney working.  As usual, no one slept well in the hospital, but the good news is that as of this morning, she was doing much better.  She ate a good breakfast and was drinking lots of fluids on her own.  When I visited after dropping the other girls off at school, she was her usual happy self and was bouncing around the room.  They even took the IV off her while I was there!

Dr. J.J. was very pleased with her condition this morning and after a quick ultrasound of her kidney and a visit with the GI group, she’ll be coming home this afternoon.  That should make everyone happy because both Sophia and Harper hate it when Piper isn’t around.  No one sleeps well and there is a lot of whining about everything.

The whining…it never stops!

If anything changes, I will let you know, but all is well.  As Dr. J.J. told us, the first 6 months to a year, the doctors will be very conservative.  Anytime she gets ill, they will want her in the hospital for observation.  After a year, they won’t be so concerned, but we have to keep this kidney in great shape.

On another note, April Fedale learned that she got her dream job with the NICU at Christiana Hospital and we couldn’t be more thrilled and proud of her!  She and her sister Autumn have been such great blessings in our lives and we want all the best for both of them!

Love – Chris and Erin
